Charles – Just my opinion being expressed here, but possibly your wife needs a second opinion about being on Prednisone for the rest of her life.  Yes, Prednisone shuts down your adrenal gland from allowing your body to produce natural steroids, the pituitary gland can also shut down.  Unfortunately the long term effects of Prednisone (diabetes onset due to pre-disposed factors you already know about) are also among other things, Osteoporosis is the biggest.  There is another medication out on the market now called Entocort, which is another form of Prednisone but it is metabolized in the liver where the Prednisone is metabolized throughout your body.  Many people are able to reach some remission level with the Entocort and able to wean off the Prednisone. Just a thought, as there has been quite the discussion about Prednisone on another group I belong to.  I have taken Prednisone for about 6 months and after 4 months could hardly walk a block without hurting from joint pain. Good luck to your wife and I hope you find some good answers.  Have her talk to the doctor about Entocort and if it will work for her. Darcy Stice wife to Don, type II +Avandia 4mg/day

My wife just found out she has diabetes as a result of taking prednisone which, she is told, she must take the rest of her life because her petuitary gland stopped functioning. Is anyone else in this predicament? Thanks Charles Duncan for Erma Duncan — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).

Darcy: Thanks for the reply.  What is the name of the other group to which you referred where Prednisone is discussed. I will speak with our doctor this morning at the hospital regarding Entocort.  I’ll let you know what she says. I did not mention in my original message that my wife also has osteoporosis and neuropathy.  Although, under the circumstances, she gets around fairly well. Charles

Charles, Yes I am, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in February and it came on very suddenly with no hint of a problem. In November I took a course of Prednisone for asthma. While on it, my vision went very bad with blurring and then I started to have the thirst and lose weight very rapidly (40 lbs in 8 weeks) When I finally went to the doctor my BS level was 408 and I had to start twice a day insulin injections. The doctor is 99% certain it was from the Prednisone. When I went back to research the medication I found out that this is listed a complication of Prednisone. At my last check my Hac1 test was down from 13.7 to 6.2 so that is very encouraging but the doctor says the problem is not likely to reverse itself as the Prednisone has permanently damaged by pancreas. Here are a few links for you. http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/steroids.htm http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a601102.html From what I understand of it, pred can cause diabetes to be ‘brought forward’, if the patient already has the other factors. It is a bit of a contentious topic but many people now feel that it unmasks the insulin resistance whoch may already be there. http://www.coloradohealthsite.org/chnqna.html?Diabetes?Relationship% 20to%20Other%20Diseases?3798 or http://tinyurl.com/biq3 if your news client doesn’t wrap the url.
