11 month old question.

Question:

I would like to first thank you all for you inforamtion and kind words. I decided to test her out of curiosity. When my sister was diagnosied. My mother set aside the 4th of each month (day she was caught) as a family check day. I just thought and decided. The tests all came back fine. I am still curious as to if they were fine then why was she so high? My Dr. has me testing 3xs a day, and then let him know those numbers, and he will work from there. Thanks again for your time and concern. Tabatha

I read further, and have to make another comment.  Averaging 140 is not great.  You may want to consider get this under control, so your daughter can have you around for a long time.  Have the doctor check your fasting level, and perhaps your A1C level to see how you are doing.  Nothing wrong with getting some meds to help you if you need them.  Many diabetics here do not average near 140.  Start helping your daughter by helping yourself. When you run a little high, how high is that?  Don’t hesitate to get some help with meds if you need them.  Ignoring the problem won’t help.  You should never go over 140 if you are normal. —–Not being a doctor I can only suggest that you check how many carbohydrates 26 animal crackers have.  Sugar is a carbohydrate but something low in sugar or sugar free usually has many more carbohydrates in the form of its other ingredients.  All carbohydrates will raise blood glucose, not just sugar.  The example one company uses that a small baked potato has as many carbohydrates as a small brownie is quite valid and both will raise blood glucose levels. If you are averaging 140, then you really need to see a Dr. and get a diagnosis.  There is more to diabetes than just high blood sugar.  These things need to be checked.  You have a baby!  You need to take care of yourself! — Type 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~jbove/ Julie Bove, posting from new account

Very scary for me… I just checked a newsgroup to post on, and did. My sister like I said is 5 years old, and just celebrated her 4 years with T1. She was dx’d at 18 months, with a number of 364. I did wash her fingers, and no I bought the strips the other night. I wasn’t feeling well, and I decided to check mine. I sometimes run a little high, but it’s easy for me to control. I haven’t been officialy diagnosed with the disease, mostly cause I am too scared. I just go for a run when I am a little high, and then I feel good. It only happens about once or twice a month for me. When my family was out here in CA last year for the Children With Diabetes confrence my sister got a new kit, so my mother gave me her old one. It’s the FreeStyle. I went and got strips, and tested myself, I average about 140. It runs in my family, my grandmother, my sister, but I also heard that a thyroid problem could cause the high bg levels. So I am having the Dr. test her for that also. Thanks for the help… Tabie

I can’t say much about your child’s problem, but then I probably don’t have to.  She has a mother who is going to be energetic, persistent, aggressive, diligent and maybe sometimes downright obnoxious until she gets to the bottom of this and assures herself that her daughter is getting the best care available. That’s what mothers do. (I am an old f*rt engineer who has noticed such things often during the last 60 years) However, nobody is paying that kind of attention to the mother. . .whose blood sugars seem to run higher than mine. . .and I’m a full bore, undeniable, beyond a doubt, Type 1 diabetic who sometimes shoots insulin nine times a day. We had a poster who "ran a little high but was easy to control".   He is a male nurse (IIRC) so he was on top of the situation . . . until he ended up in the Emergency Room with DKA. If T1 runs in your family, your "run high sometimes" can just plain blow up on you and give you some serious problems.  If I were in your shoes, I would be testing myself daily, or at least a couple of times a week. T1 is reputed to have a weak genetic link and therefore doesn’t usually "run in families".  However, I know of a family in which every member in three generations developed T1 between the ages of 27 and 40. Good luck with both of your patients.  I hope neither of you have to join our club. Regards   Old Al

So can Prednisone for asthma too, my daughter runs high when on that. But wait for the results from the doctor before you run out and buy a new meter.

Tabie… This must be very scary for you. Most of us here are T2’s and adult onset…  Though we do have many T1’s I don’t know how many of them were dx’d as infants. Our experiences come from our research as adults, diagnosed as adults. A good place for you to get info on T1 is the Juvenile Diabetes Assoc website. I’m curious as to what prompted you to check her glucose numbers?  Were the strips unexpired?  Did you wash her fingers? Try not to worry too much as you wait for the doctor’s report. My thoughts will be with you… let us know what happens. Jennifer – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have an 11 month old little girl, who has had high glucose numbers today, > and yesterday. The latest information is that two tests >126 indicate diabetes.  It is possible that if she has some sort of illness or infection, this could raise the numbers above normal.  Unfortunately, I don’t know much about juvenile diabetes.  So I can’t help you there.  I do know that people who do not have diabetes will not usually go >126, nor will their BG fluctuate much from what they ate or didn’t eat. — Type 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~jbove/ Julie Bove, posting from new account
