Thanks, ASD!
Question:
Just wanted to thank all those who volunteered so many helpful ideas after I was diagnosed as a T2 last month. The low-carb advice was exactly what I needed! I saw an immediate, dramatic improvement in my BGs when I adjusted my meal plan for low carb. I’ve also lost another 7 lbs. in the past month, and I’m very happy about that. I’ve lost a total of 28 lbs., the first 20 of that due to uncontrolled diabetes. I’m feeling better than I have in several months. I’ve gone, in just a little over a month, from BGs in the 600’s to these numbers (today’s results): 107 fasting; 116 2 hrs. PP; 78 2 hrs. PP. I swear I can hear the "Hallelujah Chorus" playing in the background as I post this…LOL The 107 was the first fasting reading I’ve had under 110 since diagnosis. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow morning, and I know he’s going to be so pleased when he sees my BG log. I’m hoping we can start thinking about lighter doses of Actos and Glucotrol (or maybe even discontinuing the Glucotrol completely). Yeah, I know it’s a little soon after diagnosis, but hope springs eternal. I hope to be controlling my diabetes with just diet and exercise in the very near future. My diabetes came on over this past summer without any warning (normal BGs in Feb. and May 2002). I now have a sneaky feeling that my asthma med (Advair, an inhaled synthetic steroid) may be the culprit, as I was on it for well over a year. I’ve been off the Advair for a month, with the doc’s permission. I’m wondering if that’s also a factor in my steadily-declining BGs. I’ll take lower BGs any way I can get ‘em! And there’s another reason I’m really happy today: I quit smoking on October 15, 2000, so I’m celebrating my second smoke-free anniversary. Life is good! Hugs, Karen T2 Diagnosed 9/11/02

Life : is good! : It’s funny how we remember these dates. I quit smoking on April 13th 1992. I remember so well because I was admitted to the ER with a BP of 178/121. Gave the a GOOD reason to quit. Had a pack of cigarettes in my pocket, looked at ‘em pulled ‘em out of my pocket and gave them a fling in the can. Jim

Jim, it’s a miracle you didn’t have a stroke with your BP that high! That would have been enough for me to quit the filthy weed, too. I quit because it was just getting too darned expensive, and I didn’t want to give Big Tobacco another dime of my money. It’s a good thing we quit smoking. In one of my books on diabetes, there’s a sentence that sticks in my mind: "If you have diabetes and smoke, you’re asking for an amputation." Pretty powerful words. If I still had nicotine cravings, I’d make those words my mantra! Karen

I was about 35 when I found out about my high BP. My mother had a massive stroke at 45. A real life changer for her… She was very happy to learn that I had quit smoking when I did. Jim

Congratulations on all your good news. I am also on Advair and it doesn’t have any effect on my bgs. Pixie
