BEWARE OF UNREGULATED FASTING

Question:

Hey, I’m as cynical as the next guy but some of his concepts make metabolic sense. Do thin people live longer? -MT >"In the fasting state, the body scours for dead cells, damaged tissues, and

fatty deposits, all of which are burned for fuel or expelled as waste. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > WHAT AN ABSOLUTE LOAD OF BOLLOCKS > HUNKY

Response:

Response:

I find that fasting every other day works very well for me.  On a fasting day it will be juices and teas.  If I am a bit low I add a bit of Tofu in the juices and it becomes a smoothie. Don’t know if this would work for anyone else but I see the non eating days of days of freedom from cooking. I also use these days for deep meditation and Tai Chi. Beware of unregulated fasting By Vandana Luthra The Hindustan Times April 10, 2003 April 9 – Fasting has been used for thousands of years by many religions and cultures as a means for increasing spiritual awareness and religious observation. Fasting has also been praised as a way to clean your body of impurities. Fasting as a health enhancing method dates back to prehistory, with records of the great physician Hippocrates employing fasts as part of his healing regime for many patients. But how many of us do really know the true meaning of the word fasting? Fasting is the avoidance – totally or partially of the eating of food or liquid, except for pure water, for a particular period of time. There are many modified versions of fasting, which allows the taking of juices, and even some foods, as part of their protocol. There are ‘mono-diets’ (single food fasting), dry fasts (eating dry food like rusks with minimal liquid intake), juice fasts and herb tea fasts. In absolute terms, these methods are not really ‘fasts’ at all, but restricted diets. In recent times the value of fasting as the main therapeutic tool in the treatment of numerous diseases like; heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, obesity, pancreatitis, arthritis, allergy, ulcers, asthma, etc is growing rapidly in countries like Germany, UK, Scandinavia, USA and even India. The reason for this is that fast allows healing to occur, and does not impose a solution on the body. Human body through its well-known homoeostatic (self-regulating) mechanisms has an innate ability to normalize itself if it is given the chance. Fasting gives it that chance. Three to eight hundred billion body cells are replaced daily during fasting. Approximately one quarter of your cells are either dying, very old or need to be replaced. Unless your body gets rid of the dying cells it cannot build new ones. In the fasting state, the body scours for dead cells, damaged tissues, and fatty deposits, all of which are burned for fuel or expelled as waste. Importance of fasting You might be thinking why does fasting have such a powerful effect in healing the body? Fasting dissolves diseased cells in a systematic manner, leaving healthy tissue. The result is a thorough cleansing of the tube, membrane and cellular structures. There is a remarkable redistribution of nutrients in the fasting body. It hangs on to precious minerals and vitamins while categorizing on old tissue, toxins and inferior materials. During a fast, a metamorphosis occurs. The body undergoes a tearing down and rebuilding of damaged materials. For this reason, fasting is famous for its ability to rejuvenate and give the body a more youthful tone. More than four days of fast is termed as a long fast, which should never be under taken without the approval and guidance of a health care professional, knowledgeable in the use of fasting. But then how many of us take fasting as a detoxification process and follow it seriously? With the beginning of fasting season, I feel we all should be well aware of the side effects and contraindications of unsafe fasting. The common side effects are usually relatively mild and are rarely serious, these include: 1. Headaches (usually lasting less than a day, and are common in the beginning of the fast). Don’t take any medicine to suppress the headache. However cold compresses, warm footbaths and neck massage should help. 2. Insomnia is very common at the beginning of fasts. Nothing should be taken to induce sleep. However, bath with aroma oils helps in bringing relaxation and easing your body. 3. Nausea and a coated tongue are usual during the fast. Scarping the tongue and use of herbal mouthwash can help reduce these symptoms. However, gentle acupressure on the anti-nausea point on the wrist should help minimize the nauseatic feeling. 4. Dizziness, light-headedness and palpitations are common early symptoms. They highlight the need for rest. Relaxation and slow deep breathing exercises are suggested to assist in the normalization of these transient symptoms. 5. Increased body odour, skin rashes and dry skin may appear during a fast. Regular warm but not hot showers or aromatherapy baths using appropriate oils are suggested. 6. Aching limbs and muscles may occur early on in a fast. Indulging in a massage and doing light stretching exercise should ease these symptoms, which reduce on their own as detoxification progresses. 7. It is normal to feel colder than usual during a fast, and suggested that your dress more warmly. 8. Bed-rest is not essential or even desirable unless your physical condition demands it during a fast. Fresh air and a little gentle exercise are helpful, but extensive exercising and sunbathing should be avoided to conserve energy and prevent dehydration. 9. If serious symptoms occur on a long fast, such as a sudden drop in blood pressure, or a feeling of extreme cold which persists, or a prolonged, rapid and weak pulse, or extreme weakness, or difficulty in breathing, then the fast should be stopped. 10. If acute anxiety and emotional distress are experienced then the fast should be broken. 11. Uric acid levels in the bloodstream rise during a fast and if there is a history of gout, caution is required. Ensure high levels of fluid intake to combat the development of gout during the fast. Contraindications to fasting beyond 48 hours: Emaciation: Anyone who is severely underweight for any reason should not fast for long period. However, controlled short fasts can assist in normalizing the emaciation in some cases (malabsorption problems, for example). If emaciation is because of advanced cancer, TB or to an eating disorder such as anorexia, then fasting of any sort should not be undertaken. Fasting during pregnancy: This could be dangerous for the foetus in some instances, especially if the woman is diabetic. Fasting during lactation period should be discouraged, since milk flow is likely to cease and will be difficult to start again. Fasting during menstruation: It may be a good idea to avoid fasting just before or during menstruation as the detoxification process may result in an increased flow, increased discomfort or a delay in onset of the period. Kidney failure is thought to be a sound reason for avoiding fasting since it makes excessive demands on the remaining kidney function. Long fasts can be harmful for anyone with severe liver disease or severe anaemia. There are strong contraindications to even short-term fasting for anyone who is taking prescription drugs, as unpredictable reactions could occur. This is particularly true of anyone taking steroids medication, or who has taken steroid medication in the past for long periods. A similar caution is required regarding anyone taking forms of hormone replacement, such as in case of under active thyroid. On the whole fasting is healthy for our body, gives us the chance to heal from inside and the best way to detoxify if kept the right way. So make sure you consult your physician and dietician before starting your fasts.
