Question:

Dear group. As someone who is lucky enough to have never suffered from serious depression, but knowing someone who has, could someone please tell me how depression affects the mind and personality and what are the signs to look for when they start to recover. My partner was on Floxotine but stopped taking them after 6 months, within a few days she went into a major depression, she totally changed both in her thinking and personality, By the way she ran off and is now with someone, she is acting strange and I am now her worst enemy. People tell me she will eventually pull round or crack but I suspect this could be a long time coming, it has been nearly 5 months now and she seems to be getting more angry and shutting of from people. Thanks Graham.

it would be easier if you just got some books on the subject , to type out what you’re asking would take a week or so .

Well, well, well, angry young man.  That clears up a bunch. I was beginning to think you didn’t have a method for that madness.

Response:

Hi,I feel kind of strange doing this, but I’m at the point that I need other people to talk to. Have any of you been written off by your doctors?I mean being told that there is nothing they can do for you. If so,how did you deal with the feelings that came with this pronouncement? I’m really lost.

Response:

Well, what happened is that about 2 yrs. ago,I started having problems with my wrist when I was writing,I went to the doctor and got told "Don’t worry,it’s just muscle strain"(Yeah, right) The problem persisted, and I went to another doctor, who referred me to a Rheumatologist. He did his tests, and two eeks after I saw him my hands started to constrict into claws. Now,after whatever it is (not diagnosed) has attacked both arms, shoulders, back, and robbed me of over 50% of my strength in 2 years.I see a Pain Clinic and get told 2 things, 1)The condition is Irreversible. 2)That there is absolutely nothing that they can do to help me.Including giving me painkillers that actually work. They say I MIGHT be able to slow it down through exercise. I just don’t know how to deal with this,I’m only 23,and it feels like everything has come to a crashing halt.Sorry for venting like this. Hi James!!        It’s nice to meet you, but a shame it had to be in "chronic-pain"!!! There are so many of us here with a lot of practical experience; I’m sure someone is going to be able to help in some way!!!    Just stick around a couple days…..I think you’ll be pleased.        Have the docs given you a firm diagnosis yet???  That will be first for us to know so we can steer you in the right direction!!   The regulars here have hundreds of years experience in dealing with intractable pain; you *will* get good advice!!  :-)    (Have they said if your pain & contractures are neurological or muscular in origin???)        The regular posters try to avoid mentioning just one type of organized religion;  this is a big world and all faiths are valid to the people who hold them!!    Please don’t think that this is a group only for one religion…. it’s not!!    If you go back through the archived posts in Dejanews I’m sure you’ll find something of worth. Concerning 1st PETER 5:7 TURN TO THE ONE WHO CARES: I did that, I looked up at the sky a few years ago and asked, God, why–this is so senseless what has happened to me, will you please make it stop. It is really touching that you care because I believe you are sincere. But if God cared, why would he put us all in this situation of pain and suffering.  And don’t rattle off some passage verbatim written in a book on paper and ink–see if you can think for yourself and tell us why a "Loving God" would do that to His Children.  Would you do that to your children? The most common answer to this is God does not give us more than we can handle or that he gives us these burdens to make us stronger. Let me ask you this–would you break you childs leg to make him stronger later in life? I wouldn’t do that to my children jefe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >James… >          I have been a christian for over 20 years.. and I know now that God >cared for me long before I cared about Him or anything concerning Him.. Hi james, I had many doctors tell me for years that they could not help me. I have had several disabling accidents and am disgnosed with Fibromyalgia and arthritis. My pain level is about a 15 on a 1-10 scale and it is all over body pain. I finally met a caring, loving doctor, who prescribed pain medication and medication for sleep. I can tell you from my experience to change doctors until you find one who is sympathetic to suffering and pain. That is the key to getting help. What I told my doctor (very politely, but insistingly) was: "I know that you care very much about me, and only want to help me. have unbearable pain and need your help and my pain is causing me to nearly get into auto accidents, because I cannot concentrate when I am actually able to attempt driving, the pain is too severe. I also have great difficulty walking, and doing things without hurting myself, because the constant pain is so great, that I fall and drop things and cannot manipulate things like kitchen knives and other objects without fear of hurting myself. I need medication that can help to ease my suffering and give me a measure of safety when I do daily things. Can you please help me?" Print out the above and maybe modify it to your situation and bring it with you to the Dr. and read it to him/her. Tell him/her that you wrote it down because it was so important, and you wanted to communicate clearly. It praises the Dr. ("I know you care, etc," makes them aware of danger to you, they usually respond to that, and it gives them a justification for prescribing pain meds.) You can even ask them if they would like a copy of what you wrote down, for their records. (good for your record, anyway!) If the Dr. responds favorably (and only a monster could not) then you have found a sympathetic soul. If the Dr. responds unfavorably, then dump the monster and switch to another, and another and another, until you eventually find a decent human being. they ARE out there. Hope this helps… gentle peace, Jack – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Hi Jefe, >These days,I’m more tempted to make frogs’ legs! :) >I know I shouldn’t give up,but it is awfully hard when you have some of the >best specialists in your city tell you that you’re screwed… >James >You start looking for another Doctor that cares and that can and will help >because they are out there–i promise you they are out there.  You just >have >to kiss a lot of frogs until you find that one right Prince of a Doctor. >Don’t ever give up, because then the bastards would win.  Don;t ever let >the >bastards win. >Jefe >>Hi,I feel kind of strange doing this, but I’m at the point that I need >other >>people to talk to. >>Have any of you been written off by your doctors?I mean being told that >>there is nothing they can do for you. >>If so,how did you deal with the feelings that came with this >pronouncement? >>I’m really lost.

Hi Jack, OUCH!!! My doctor has tried to prescribe painkillers,he has me on T3’s,Idarac,Flexeril and Naproxen, the problem is that he is afraid to give me anything stronger than these because I have a very strong immune system, and Bronchial-Asthma.I had to fight just to get these, because he was afraid of interactions. You’re at least lucky/unlucky enough that they actually know what you have. I am starting to seriously consider starting the search for a new doctor. I’m not sure what you mean by being ‘written’ off by doctors. There’s many times when a doctor must tell a patient that there’s nothing more to offer a patient in the way of a cure but there are treatments available for most disorders. If your doctor told you to ‘live’ with the pain or ‘deal with it’, then its time to find another doctor. For many people living with chronic pain there is no cure, but there’s certainly treatments available. If this doctor didn’t offer any treatment or give you somewhere to turn for treatment, don’t give up. People have to become actively involved in their care, if this means going from physician to physician until you find one that is willing to help, then thats what needs to be done. Believe me, there are doctors that will help. You didn’t mention what type pain/disorder you have, but feel free to email me and I can try to give you a list of physicians in your area that deal with chronic pain. Good luck.

Response:

Dear James Hello I don’t know what your pain stems from but I can tell you I feel for what your going through my surgeon after doing an anterior fusion on my neck will give me no pain meds at all and I am going through a horrible time of it with him now as he wants to say that this is muscluar pain not something from the surgery… so at this point he has me scheduled in to see a pain management doctor but I have been going through this with him since May so maybe with alittle luck this pain dr will be the one that helps me I am trying to hopeful.. I hope that you seek another dr.. one that will verify your pain for you … for the longest time I have been through this just wanting someone to validate my suffering… Best of Luck to you James deb/fl – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi,I feel kind of strange doing this, but I’m at the point that I need other > people to talk to. > Have any of you been written off by your doctors?I mean being told that > there is nothing they can do for you. > If so,how did you deal with the feelings that came with this pronouncement? > I’m really lost.

Most of the meds that you have been given are NSAIDs and to my knowledge, can be more dangerous for asthmatics than analgesics are. It sounds like your doc can’t be bothered to do any research or consult any colleagues to determine which analgesics are the safest for asthmatics to take. Trust me, you are not the only asthmatic in the entire world who also has chronic pain – and you can be sure that many of these asthmatics are taking some form of analgesics, including opiates. Have you asked your doc for a referral to a pain specialist or a pharmacologist? Please let us know where you live and we may be able to find you a doctor. I gather that the "ca" in your address means that you live in Canada. I am also in Canada and have had no problem finding a doctor. if you have bronchial asthma, then why would he prescribe naproxen?? this causes me to have sever asthma attacks, and my doctor explained to me that it might not affect asthma tight away, but then it will eventually and the damage is irreversible please don’t take naproxen anymore, or any other NSAID> ask the doctor every time if this is an NSAID when he is prescribing something. sometimes they do forget that you have asthma, (they don’t have time to read you complete chart everytime you visit and they do have lots of patients, they need to be reminded) and you could always cry, they seem to respond well to tears!!(lets them know that you are in REAL pain) Krista – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi Jack, > OUCH!!! > My doctor has tried to prescribe painkillers,he has me on > T3’s,Idarac,Flexeril and Naproxen, the problem is that he is afraid to give > me anything stronger than these because I have a very strong immune > system, and > Bronchial-Asthma.I had to fight just to get these, because he was afraid of > interactions. > You’re at least lucky/unlucky enough that they actually know what you have. > I am starting to seriously consider starting the search for a new doctor. > James >Hi james, >I had many doctors tell me for years that they could not help me. I think we should try to make helpful comments instead of telling James to read the bible!! Gods (God, Allah, Jahwe a.s.o.) don’t exist, prayers are what you say to yourself. Success in life depends on human effort and human help. If you are in a situation of constant pain, such recommendations and stories from "a Dr. out there" are simply annoying. We are talking in this ng about REAL facts, REAL pain and REAL help in THIS world. If anyone wants to discuss the subject "religion", he should post to a bible-discussion-forum. SIGRID, If we are a NG of people helping people and we are!!!! I feel encouragement comes from different  Avenue’s in LIFE.. YOU  should be open to these points.. Sure hope we can encourage James as well as other’s. Asking someone to read things that has helped in your life could very well help other’s. Hi James, you may feel lost but you found us so you aren’t alone. what was it you were diagnosed with James? Do you have only 1 doctors opinion,if so perhaps you should seek a second opinion before you throw in the towel. But if you know in your heart of hearts that what the doc says is reasonable and true, welcome to the long hard fight of coming to terms with your limitations. At least 1 or more of us have been told much the same thing by our docs,so talk to us and we’ll share some of the burden. Wecome to the group. aussie annieb

CW in case you don’t realise it capital letters are considered shouting, and extreme bad manners on news groups such as this. Perhaps you could put down your bible for a minute and check out a FAQ on nettiquette. If this gentleman wanted bible stories picked out for him I feel sure he would have sought assistance from his local church.I am also sure a simple "you are in my prayers" would surfice or email him privately if you feel you must give him bible instruction. aussie annieb

Hi Ann, I have seen many specialists over the last 2 yrs.,and I finally saw a Pain Specialist a few months ago and he pronounced me untreatable and told me that my condition was irreversible. He then proceeded to tell my GP that this condition may be caused by the abuse when I was younger.Which he deduced from one question I might add. I haven’t been diagnosed, that’s what bugs me.While in my heart,I believe they may be right about me being untreatable,it still bothers me that I don’t even know what’s doing this to me.And now that this Pain Quack has said this,I am not eligible for any financial assistance for equipment that might make my life easier. Sorry to vent like this but talking about this stuff is reminding me how angry I am about the whole situation. If he tells you that is his opinion you are "untreatable", maybe you should tell him that his bill is "unpayable." Everyone has some form of treatment option, even if it that option is a "lets watch it a see what happens" or "lets get together every 6 months and see if there are any changes in technology," jefe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi Ann, >I have seen many specialists over the last 2 yrs.,and I finally saw a Pain >Specialist a few months ago and he pronounced me untreatable and told me >that my condition was irreversible. He then proceeded to tell my GP that this >condition may be caused by the abuse when I was younger.Which he deduced >from one question I might add. >I haven’t been diagnosed, that’s what bugs me.While in my heart,I believe >they may be right about me being untreatable,it still bothers me that I >don’t even know what’s doing this to me.And now that this Pain Quack has >said this,I am not eligible for any financial assistance for equipment that >might make my life easier. >Sorry to vent like this but talking about this stuff is reminding me how >angry I am about the whole situation. >James >> Hi,I feel kind of strange doing this, but I’m at the point that I need >other >> people to talk to. >> Have any of you been written off by your doctors?I mean being told that >> there is nothing they can do for you. >> If so,how did you deal with the feelings that came with this >pronouncement? >> I’m really lost. >Hi James, >you may feel lost but you found us so you aren’t alone. >what was it you were diagnosed with James? >Do you have only 1 doctors opinion,if so perhaps you should seek a second >opinion before you throw in the towel. >But if you know in your heart of hearts that what the doc says is >reasonable >and true, welcome to the long hard fight of coming to terms with your >limitations. At least 1 or more of us have been told much the same thing by >our >docs,so talk to us and we’ll share some of the burden. >Wecome to the group. >aussie annieb

What you have is called Pectum Excavatum. This reduces the oxygen uptake severely because of less lung expansion. It can be reqaired by surgery and if you are having asthma symptoms you need to have it repaired.
