emphysema and buteyko

How do you know that? I have never met/ contacted a supporter, just made a search on the Internet about asthma and that was the most interesting thing I found. I also found some yoga site that was talking about almost the same things without mentioning Buteyko.

At least some of what doctors say is good for one is based on scientific studies that have passed peer review. The only study on Buteyko failed peer review i.e. was flawed. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> >how do you know? have you tried it with no results? > I value my health and am not willing to take that risk. > "With Confidence in our Armed Forces – > with the determination of our people – > we will gain the inevitable triumph – > so help us god." > Franklin Delano Roseveldt, 8 december 1941

Did it improve your asthma? Or did it just fool you into thinking you were better? BTW, did the Buteyko supporters tell you that the ‘Brisbane’ study which they cite as ‘proof.’ Is tainted by lies and academic fraud? If the treatment were as good as claimed the supporters would not have to lie. There was an interesting article in the 8 Feb 2002 Science (p947). It discussed the placebo effect and shoed that a placebo activated the same neuronal network as the opioid analgesics. Here’s the link if you care to view it. http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/295/5557/947a

I think it’s accepted by researchers that breathing technique can be beneficial to COPD sufferers. The trick is to breathe out much slower than in. Also use the nose as a heat and moisture exchanger. Avoid mouth breathing. There is a nice Internet mailing list at www.copd-support.com The mailing list is for anyone with COPD: emphysema, chronic bronchitis, both. — Steven D. Litvintchouk

Like other quacks, they also count on one more thing–the reluctance of people to post anecdotal negative experiences (treatment failures). We see countless posts by folks who claim to have tried some unproven remedy (Buteyko, dietary supplements, etc.), and found it works great for them. Rarely do we get posts from people who report that the remedies didn’t work, or hurt them in some way. So there’s a real bias toward optimism and "miracle" cures on both the Internet and in the mass media. When they thought that diet could prevent breast cancer, that made headlines and was featured on prominent TV news shows. After the clinical trials were failures, that story got buried on the back page somewhere. The real big story about diet is: Diet does not cure any diseases except nutrient-deficiency diseases like pellagra and beri-beri. But you probably have never seen that story on TV. — Steven D. That is the question. Since everything that has an effect on the body will also have side effects – there are three possibilities: 1) It does nothing, and also has no side effects. 2) It does something and has unknown side effects. 3) It does nothing, but has unknown side effects. And that’s what they count on…someone just ‘giving it a try’. There is much on the ‘net to discredit this scam, not the least of which is their own flawed study.

One of the main dangers is being lulled into a false sense of security, and neglecting to use real treatments that work. One of the anthems of the Buteyko guys is to ‘throw away your inhalers’. Any time someone promises a cure for a disease without a cure, it’s called a scam…

There was a Yahoo group as of a year ago. Don’t ask too many questions. They will kick you out. You understand they think that your lung condition is the result of your overbreathing, and has nothing to do with your genetics or smoking?

Go to this link and do a search of alt.support.asthma for the keyword buteyko and you will discover for yourself what response buteyko gets on this newsgroup. Perhaps it will also lead you to a site where you can give your money away for nothing. http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?hl=en PS Why do you think their newsgroup "died a couple years ago"?
