newby with Advair questions

Advair is a medication used to treat asthma. Buy advair inhaler and feel better today!

Question:

Use the 250/50 twice a day, approximately every 12 hours, and find yourself a new doctor.  Try the 100/50 for a few days if you like and, if you feel worse, get right back on the 250/50.  No need to suffer, no need to worry about "build[ing] up a resistance," no need for any of that.  I started on Advair a few months ago and expect to be taking it for the rest of my life or until something better comes along. The "throw it away after 30 days" seems a bit extreme to me as well. What’s inside there is basically a standard blister pack, the same kind of foil packaging you get sometimes with pills where you have to push the pill through the back of the package.  The dispenser just opens up one dose for you.  I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t last for quite a while since each dose is individually packaged, IOW, if the whole thing can sit on the shelf unused, whatever doses remain in an partially used one should last equally well.  I’m not a doctor but that’s my two-cents worth from what I know about the product. -S- – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I recently was prescribed Advair. I recently was prescribed Advair. The first doctor in my medical group that prescribed it told me to take the 100/50 three times a day and only take it for a month or two weeks at a time, until I feel better, and then stop so that I would not build up a resistance. I used it three times a day for two weeks and it helped, but I was still having a lot of trouble, so a different doctor that was there two weeks later gave me the 250/50 and I have been using that for two weeks and I am noticing much less breathing trouble. He did not say anything about stopping using it. Does anyone else’s doctor tell them to use Advair on and off? I am scared to stop using it now that I finally feel better. Also, the instructions that come with the Advair say to throw it away 30 days after opening it, but wouldn’t it be okay tucked a way in plastic in a dark drawer for a while. Must I throw it away if I don’t use it all right away? Any input on these matters would be apreciated. Thanks! Lynn

My doc always said to use it ONLY 2 times a day and use it everyday. The way i understand it..Its a maintenance medicine and you shouldnt stop using it once you feel better. and if you use it right, there would be no need to store it because there are 60 doses in one discus that should last you the whole month

Clueless doc. Doesn’t know the dose of the drug and doesn’t understand asthma or its medications. Never speak to this doc about your asthma again. If you are having an emergency and this is the only one available go to the ER and take your chances there. > I used it > three times a day for two weeks and it helped, but I was still having > a lot of trouble, so a different doctor that was there two weeks later > gave me the 250/50 and I have been using that for two weeks and I am > noticing much less breathing trouble. Occasionally the dose can be tapered down and even possibly stopped if your symptoms are well controlled for a suitable period of time. There is no set point at which you should stop it (you will not develop resistance). Most asthmatics who need inhaled steroids will nee them all the time unless they can remove a trigger. >  Also, the instructions that come with the Advair say to throw > it away 30 days after opening it, but wouldn’t it be okay tucked a way > in plastic in a dark drawer for a while. I would think that what they mean is that after a month of twice daily use (the usual dose) it should be out of medication. I’m not sure how long it takes for the drug to lose potency once opened. For most people this will not be much of an issue. — CBI, MD
