can't sleep

Question:

I’ve been taking Ventolin and Flovent since this > morning and i still cough every 5 minutes (when i’m lying down).  I can’t > take ventolin more than 4 times a day so what else can i do to help me > sleep.  thanks

You’d best be getting to ER or the doctor. When your meds stop doing the job or you have a temptation to use them oftener than prescribed, medical attention is the best thing you can have. It’s either that or sleep sitting up. But a medico is the best choice. Nell

Do you have Atrovent?  One or two puffs normally stops my ticklish unproductive cough.  Sometimes it frees up phlegm I was unaware of.

I was taking more then eight puffs of Ventolin per day    until my doc put me on Salmeterol.  Now I don’t    need Ventolin any more   Hope this helps.    regards,    Duncan.

I don’t take any steroids for asthma.  I am 74 years old and have known I had asthma since I was 20 years old.  Since then for most of the time I took non prescription drugs for asthma attacks.  For about five years now I have been taking prescription drugs for asthma.  I am using only Albuterol and Serevent.  They work good for me. I had coughing once about five years ago.  I thought I had a cold and did not take my asthma medicine, so nothing got better.  I started my asthma medicine again and the coughing went away.  I think that is when I discovered I had emphysema.  I went to the doctor for the breathing, and he sent me for pulomonary tests.  My emphysema is not severe, but I know I have it.   As far as I know there are no long range statistics on steroids.  What I suspect though is that some doctors are prescribing steroids for asthma attacks.  When I had an attack of asthma once and went to a Kaiser Hospital they gave me an injection of adreniline and I left the hospital and went on about my days work.  That was before I was taking prescription drugs for asthma. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi, for about 3 nights, i’ve have not been able to sleep because i wake up > every 5 minutes coughing. For asthma exacerbations, drugs can be increased according to an Action Plan from your doctor. Typically inhaled steroids are doubled and Ventolin used as needed to control symptoms. Ventolin can be used more than 4x/day but you need to notify your doctor. Coughing while lying down suggests the possibility of GE reflux; again see your doctor. You may need to prop up the head of bed 6" with wood blocks to see if it helps; and use a bolster to raise the upper part of body when lying down. Ellis

Yeah, my pulmonary function test was normal too.  Even though when the nurse tried to give me the test, she had to stop the test in the middle because it had provoked a coughing spasm in me!  Since albuterol would have thrown off the results, she and I had to wait until my coughing spasm subsided by itself so we could finish the test. > Does’t make sense.  I go back to the doc when she gets the results. > Sigh. > I’m tired. > Tired of all the coughing and want some sleep.

Obviously you should see your doctor. But assuming your doctor is as clueless as mine, here is a "home remedy" you can try: I find that hot steam opens up the airways, loosens the mucus trapped down there, and (combined with 2 puffs albuterol) makes the cough productive–I can then cough up the gunk, and then I can get a good night’s sleep. I fill up the tub with hot water, close the shower curtains, and then I lie down in the tub ON MY STOMACH, so I can inhale the steam through my mouth.  I try to crouch down so my head is lower than the rest of my body–kind of like postural drainage.  After about 30-40 minutes, I can just feel all that gunk loosening up in my airways.  Combined with albuterol, this method works better than either steam or albuterol alone. — Steven D. I have a question for you – how do you (opinion) feel about ferret magazines that give free advertising in long articles to ferret mills/commercial breeders/etc., "singing their praises."  I admit that not as much negative things are said about Path Valley as Marshall Farms, and there is not much difference between the 2, other than marshalls sell for research and path valley claims not to.  But really, is it not going too far to actually promote them in a magazine written "by and for" "caring" ferret owners? Especially when that magazine is read by many people who don’t know enough about the commercial breeder’s practices to make an informed decision whether to support them or not, and all of what the article says sounds great to most people who don’t know the other side of the coin.  Even the BEST run mill/wholesaler/etc. cannot possibly care for those animals as they should be, as pets who get regular attention, exercise, playtime.  Nor would they want to, because that would take more time, money, and space, which would take away from their profits.  And the "article" (advertisement) never says anything negative, such as the babies are fixed too young, shipped to young, descenting is not necessary, etc.  My biggest problem with these practices is that it leads many people to believe that they are acceptable, or even necessary for the ferret to be kept as a pet.  (Neutering IS necessary, but not at that age.  I would NEVER want to infer that they should be sold intact to pet stores, certainly they shouldn’t be sold in pet stores at all, but they could at LEAST do it later (I KNOW you have said this is your complaint also, but many people STILL really do NOT know.)  You would not believe (or maybe you would) how frustrated I get with what little people know about ferrets before they buy them at a pet store!  And what they come out believing after visiting the pet store, whatever the salesperson told them. Many pet stores in Florida tell people it is ILLEGAL to sell ferrets that are not neutered and descented (of course, this is not true!)  They are just trying to keep people from going to breeders.  And believe it or not, even some vets hear this garbage and believe it, and spread it also!  Maybe you have different problems up there. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I couldn’t sleep and got online to read a lot of the email in the > group.  There is a lot of very informative stuff here and I think it’s > going to be invaluable  Thanks to James Milton for a prior email about > neurontin.  I’ll talk to my dr. about it when I see him next. > I’m unfortunately a very rapid cycler and so far nothing has worked for > me.  This entire week has been a real roller coaster for me and my > husband has about had it with me. > Maybe after talking to my dr. about some of your ideas we can come up > with a combo that will work.  Or we’ll just keep on experimenting. > thanks for being there > diane killian

Hi, Diane.  I am also a rapid cycler and Neurontin is supposed to be beter for that.  You should definitely ask your doctor about it.  What I did was print out all of the positive articles from this newsgroup about it and brought them to her office.  She was very interested and told me to bring her more when I see them.  Of course, I cut everyone’s names, etc. off.   Oh, and James, if you’re reading this, I have started as of yesterday to divide my dose into 4x a day instead of 3.  We’ll see how that works out.  So far so good.   >I’m unfortunately a very rapid cycler and so far nothing has worked for >me.  This entire week has been a real roller coaster for me and my >husband has about had it with me.

I can definitely relate to this.  I’d like to tell you to tell your husband to shut up (which is what I’ve done on too many occasions), but seriously, I find people — husbands, kids, etc. –are far more tolerant if you give them information.  This is a scary illness with scary consequences–taking medication for the rest of your life is frightening not only for you, but for your family as well.  Patience, talking and sharing of information is the best thing you can do here. >Maybe after talking to my dr. about some of your ideas we can come up >with a combo that will work.  Or we’ll just keep on experimenting. >thanks for being there >diane killian

Good luck to you and please let us know here how everything goes. Peace, Koo

Good luck! Some pdocs don’t want to prescribe new mood stabilizers like Neurontin or Lamictal — because they don’t have any experience with it. Duh! Someone has to be their first patient on any med. If you have a pdoc that thinks lithium is the only answer for BP illness, don’t even bother to slam the door on your way out. Let me hasten to add something so that the lovers of lithium do not attack. If lithium works well for you and the side effects are not too troublesome, I suggest that you stick with it. My motto is: "If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it". >I’m unfortunately a very rapid cycler and so far nothing has worked for >me.  This entire week has been a real roller coaster for me and my >husband has about had it with me.

Neurontin is presumably effective for many refractory ultra rapid cyclers — like I used to be. In the 4 months that I have been on Neurontin, I have not had a SINGLE cycle! And I used to experience as many as 4 complete cycles per day. As always there are no panaceas — nor universal set of adverse side effects. IMO you need to be flexible and willing to experiment — with you as the guinea pig. >Maybe after talking to my dr. about some of your ideas we can come up >with a combo that will work.  Or we’ll just keep on experimenting.

Good for you! It is more than worth the effort. >thanks for being there >diane killian
