Asthma & Oral Cortisone – Need your advises

Question:

> I would like to know if some of you are on oral cortisone and what > they think of it…

The risks are quite different for someone who is *chronically* on oral steroids and someone who is put on them for a short time to relieve severe symptoms (which I expect has happened to a large number of people posting to this ng at one time or another).   I’ve been put on short courses of steroids (usually Prednisone) a number of times, and also for comparatively long times at a highish dosage (60mg/14 days, then a very slow taper) when I was dealing with bad bronchitis as well as asthma. I’ve never had any horrendous side effects; the ones I’ve had include heartburn; some muscle weakness, especially after any exertion; definite sleeplessness and a hyper feeling; dramatically increased appetite (and food–even plain water–tastes *extremely* delicious).  I’ve never had a dramatic weight gain, and since I’m usually very sedentary when I need oral steroids (I usually need them due to an infection) and trying hard to resist eating my head off, a couple of pounds isn’t too much problem.  As a matter of fact, I’ve generally felt unnaturally good, upbeat, and pain-free on prednisone, but I realize it’s a false feeling. I’ve also known people who had the opposite reaction, and just felt terrible on steroids, so it appears to be an individual thing. HTH, zg

Hi JM, I am currently taking oral cortisone about once a week as I need it. In the past I have taken prednison and been very jittery and very moody. I once sat us the whole nite crying and unable to sleep. I now take MEDROL, it is also cortisone and I find the side effects are much milder. I you need to go on oral cortisone talk to your doctor about medrol instead of prednisone. I have found that the side effects do disapear when you stop taking the cortisone. sue

He will probably just start you on a burst dose pack for a few days and most of us don’t have a very bad reaction to that. Or if we do it is just for a couple of day and we feel enough better that we don’t notice. It is the long term use of steroids that are the bad deal. Don’t worry about the steroids unless that’s all that works for you. Most patients respond to much safer treatment than steroids. The one thing you can do is try to identify things that trigger you asthma and stay away from them. Good luck Gordon.

As I can not take "pufs" I have been taken oral cortison very often, but never in very high quantities, because my asthma is not so terribly bad (max. 25 mg a day).  For me it is an excellent medicine, because it really helps. I feel great when I take it, first I can breath, which is always nice, isn’t it, but I also feel energetic and in a good mood. >* are there any other equivalent solution instead of taking oral

cortisone?< I don’t know that, but I doubt it. It is sort of an ultimum remedium. You take it only when nothing elkse helps. >* What about weight gain when oral cortisone is well dosed (I know…

what’is well dosed?)…< When I take a relatively high dose of the stuff, it makes me feel hungry all the time, but then I don’t eat more then normally and I don’t put on weight >* Are all the side effects disapear by themself when oral cortisone is

stopped?<  Once, after I had been taking 10 mg of oral cortison every day for almost two years without much side effects, I had some problems when I stopped it. My joints hurt and for months I could not walk very well when I got up in the morning, but after a while that just went away. I don’t know how much your doctor wants to give you, but my advise is: don’t worry too much. If you need it, take it. Erica

Hello JM, I’ve only been on prednisone once, for 15 days.  I put on some weight, not much in that short of a time, tho.  I got very cranky and couldn’t sleep well, but it really worked well.   I could actually breathe much better in a matter of hours after starting prednisone. Crummy side effects for me, but well worth it. Good luck, Patrice

I have only been on oral prednisone once, but didn’t have any negative side effects for the 7 days I was on it. I didn’t gain any weight (I can gain weight just watching someone else eat), or have any trouble sleeping.  For two days when I stopped I had extreme fatigue and muscle and joint pain.  If I ever need it again I would ask for a tapering dose.  You take high doses for a couple of days and then decrease it each day after.  My son has done it both ways with no problems with either.  It is amazing how fast it works, and how much better you feel.  Hope you’re feeling better soon. Mabel
