Question:
I have atopic asthma since I was 2 years old. I need to use beta 2 agonist aerosol three or more times a day. My physician told me to use corticoid to maintain inflamattion low. It made my throat dry and, in a few weeks I got an infecction begining in throat and ending in my lungs. The same happened to me with Cromolyn and other corticosteroids each time I tried (many time in years). I’m 39 years old, no others health problems; I live in South America, Argentina, my name is Eduardo and Spanish is my native languaje. If you can help please contact me in the group or by e-mail at Thanks.

When you use a corticosteroid inhaler, always use a spacer to aid in aerosolizing the powder. After inhaling, rinse your mouth and throat with warm water to minimize the possibility that a yeast infection called thrush will develop. Cromolyn is not a steroid and cannot cause thrush but it can irritate the throat. If you get thrush there will be a whitish film around the tonsil area and back of throat. Once thrush develops, nystatin (Mycostatin) mouthwash is usually sufficient to keep it under control. The typical dose of Mycostatin is 1 teaspoon (5 cc) to swirl, gargle, and spit out after using your inhaler. One weeks therapy is often sufficient. Ref: ‘Asthma’ by Weinstein, MD
