My wife has asthma

Question:

Have any x-rays or blood tests been done to rule out infection?  If current treatment is not helping, then it need to be changed or modified.  Perhaps oral prednisone for a while would help get things more under control. Sarcoidosis can cause inflammation in the lungs.  In some people, the symptoms go away; in others there can be permanent scarring of the tissue. Some people don’t respond to singulair, if there was no improvement after taking it for a couple of weeks, there really is no point in taking it. Best wishes to you and your wife. J. Thompson, RRT

One problem with ‘air purifiers’ is that some models emit ozone.   I would be concerned at any salesman who does not publicly identify their product. "They laughed at Galileo. They laughed at Newton But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown." Carl Sagan

My wife has asthma and I’m rather worried about her … She acquired it about 4 years ago after she was diagnosed with Sarcoid – the asthma was a secondary issue that has progressively become worse. Her asthma is being treated by Ventolin and Atrovent Forte together with Oxis Turbohaler and Flixotide Accuhaler (as a preventer) and in the last 12 months she has been taking Singulair. She also takes Rhinocort Aqueous to help with sinus buildup. Despite these medications her Asthma deteriorates to the point where her lung specialist arranged for her to purchase a flutter valve that makes her cough to clear a build up of mucus. Using the flutter valve makes her cough loudly for several minutes – and anyone within earshot would think she was going to throw up. Apart from quickly sending us broke, and making my wife dependant on so many drugs she rattles I can’t see that any of these drugs are helping her much. All of these drugs are an attempt to control this illness while a cure cannot be found. She has "coughing days" every second day and frequently suffers from headaches and other symptoms which I put down as side effects to the number of drugs she is taking. She was hospitalised with Pleurisy in May 2001.She is unable to walk far and feels out of breath quickly. Despite joining a gym she is often unable to go as she is usually tired and run down. Recently she has started to take Cod Liver Oil supplements but with all these other drugs we have yet to see any improvement. The cost of all these drugs is extremely high with Singulair not even on the NHS list. At a discount pharmacist it costs $70 each month alone. I don’t know where else to turn …
