Question:

Hello!  My name is Joe; I have a research paper about the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear accident. Can you please help me narrow my topic by explaining what you concern about the causes of this terrible event? Thank you. Joe

Response:

My main concern is that even though the design of the Chernobyl reactor (RBMK) is unlike anything in commercial use today, a lot of folks try to use it as an example of why nuclear won’t fly. From what I’ve read the causes were: 1) bad design. 2) incorrect maintenance/operation immediately before and during a test procedure. Lots of good stuff on the web like http://www.geocities.com/graham_young_uk/Chernobyl.html.

Response:

Don’t forget blatantly ignoring and circumventing at least 8 failsafe systems that would have prevented the accident. I can’t remember them all, but,  Positive reactivity surplus was allowed to fall below acceptable levels.  Reactor Injection pumps were taken off line. The operators had several alarm come on and ignored them. This also happened at TMI. As a result of that accident they managed to train Reactor Operators to not ignore alarms. brad – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Organization: Prodigy Internet http://www.prodigy.com > Newsgroups: sci.energy > My main concern is that even though the design of the Chernobyl reactor > (RBMK) is unlike anything in commercial use today, a lot of folks try to use > it as an example of why nuclear won’t fly. > From what I’ve read the causes were: > 1) bad design. > 2) incorrect maintenance/operation immediately before and during a test > procedure. > Lots of good stuff on the web like > http://www.geocities.com/graham_young_uk/Chernobyl.html. > Hello! > My name is Joe; > I have a research paper about the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear > accident. > Can you please help me narrow my topic by explaining what you concern > about the causes of this terrible event? > Thank you. > Joe

Response:

There has always been the suspicion that the "event" was a sabotage conducted by a small number of Soviet officials and workers employed by Western intelligence agencies. One former CIA station chief, while not admitting to the allegation, refused to deny it. For many, the meltdown was part of a coordinated attack on the former Soviet Union which, eventually, pushed it into oblivion. If these allegations are even partially true, it would have been the greatest "black bag" operation in history…details of which may never see the light of day.

Or it could have just been the result of bad design, bad training, and bad sense. Of course proving that such a conspiracy didn’t happen is impossible, but … – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Organization: Road Runner – Texas > Newsgroups: sci.energy > There has always been the suspicion that the "event" was a sabotage > conducted by a small number of Soviet officials and workers employed by > Western intelligence agencies. Yes, but you can also use methadone for breakthrough pain. Just chew ‘em up. Jim

Response:

Any immediately released opioid can be used with methadone for breakthrough pain. codiene, oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, etc. Has your MD ordered anything for brakthrough, or are you using vicodin from a past prescription? If your doc hasn’t ordered anything for brakthrough, you need to talk with him so he’s ware you need something, otherwise he’s going to think the methadone alone is doing the trick. Communication with your doc is important. Jack

Hi Anna, I am 30 and had a bout with asthma recently that knocked me on my but.   I was at my wits end.  I looked at the American Lung Association’s site and they had some info on how to make your home survivable for asthmatics.  I took quite a few of the steps.  I ripped the rug up in my bedroom, bought an air purifier, and got all cotton mattress covers and comforter, and mite resistant pillows.  I couldn’t sleep through the night before.  Now I can and it makes life a whole lot easier.  I actually got off of my asthma meds.  (Proventil, and Ventolin).   Good Luck.  I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you all once again. I have found all the suggestions very valuable. 1. I checked the National Jewish Center, I will be flying to Denver in August to have a detailed check up. 2. I have ordered the beginners book as Martin suggested. 3. Yes I have always been underweight and no I do not think I have any eating disorder : ) Atleast I am not bulimic or something. <snip I’m a *long* way from bulimic, but have little or no appetite during asthma exacerbations — except on prednisone, when I would eat anything that didn’t bite me first. I hope with the improvement in your asthma your appetite will return to normal, since you need strength to fight off the illness. I’m so happy that you are going to National Jewish. If you are skipping meals and going for days without eating, that’s Very BAd.  Your body needs nutrition.  Constantly depriving it of food will make you malnurished, give you very brittle bones, make you much more vulnerable to all sorts of infections.   As long as you aren’t vomiting, you really do need to force yourself to eat, if only the canned drinks.  Otherwise, you are going to make yourself even sicker. >4. Well, I hate to agree with them, but a car can’t run on empty. Neither can a human body.  You want the asthma to be better, start forcing yourself to eat. >Hope all of us better breathing. >Anna. >**** Posted from RemarQ – http://www.remarq.com – Discussions Start Here ™ ****

Hi I have been lurking on this newsgroup for some time now. I was diagnosed with asthma in 1994 and it has been an uphill task since then. I am 62 inches and weigh 92 pounds. I am an extremely bad eater. I work in a high pressure environment. I am currently on: Serevent 4 puffs twice a day, Flovent 220 4 puffs 3 times a day, Atrovent 3 puffs three times a day and albuterol as and when needed. I have continuously been on Prednisone for 3 months now, 80 mgs for 1 whole month currently I am on 60 mgs, Singulair, Xanax, Proventil tablets twice a day. I also take Prevacid 30 mg twice a day. Yes Nasonex too. On May 18 I was prescribed Cipro 500 mg and yesterday I was again put on it as I have been running temperature. My IEG was 487 inspite of having been on Prednisone for such an extended period of time. My peakflow best is 420 but has been about 250-280 for the last three months. I was hospitalized in April for a week but I have continued with a tight chest horrrible wheezing terrible muscle pain nausea etc etc. Before redaing this newsgroup I used to think that I was some kind of freak and that all my problems were imaginery. No one in my circle of friends or family know anything about asthma. I am often told that I am to be blamed for my asthma. I have always been an upbeat person but finally asthma seems to be getting to me. Please advise is my medication normal? I am currently so bad that I have literally push myself to come to work and I have had to cut down a lot on my other activities. Today my allergy specialist suggested that I try accupuncture. Should I? Please let me know what your thoughts are. I really need help in feeling normal. **** Posted from RemarQ – http://www.remarq.com – Discussions Start Here ™ ****

Hello Anna.  I don’t know enough about all your meds to give a totally informed reply but it sounds about right for someone whose asthma is not under control.  The muscle pain and  nausea  sound like they may be from the predisone and Cipro.  For some reason this has been an extremenely bad season for asthmatics.  All of my friends who have asthma developed severe symptoms around the march/april time frame.  Can I ask what  your peak flow and symptoms were when you left the hospital.  I was also hospitalized in april and left with a high peak flow.  With 3 weeks it started to decline and this week I had to go back to the doctor.  I’m sure someone here will give you a more expert answer concerning your meds.  Hang in there. Niasha

Response:

Hi Anna, I have had adult onset asthma for about fifteen years now.  I did not realize how uncontrolled it was until I started reading this newsgroup.  For the last three years I haven’t even been able to walk halfway upstairs without puffing on the Proventil. Not being controlled with all the meds you are taking sounds like Hell. My asthma is now much better because I am trying new treatments and not limiting myself to traditional medicine, although I in no way recommend that you stop your prescription medication. I’ve tried a couple of alternative treatments lately that seem to help me greatly.  The first is Buteyko.  I just got the information off this website, http://www.wt.com.au/~pkolb/buteyko.htm  and followed the instructions for the technique.  I’ve been practicing it now for a month and I hope the amazing difference it makes continues.  Time will tell.  My daughter suggested I try being a Vegan (that’s a vegetarian diet that also excludes dairy products)  She also has asthma.  Two years ago she "went Vegan"  and her condition has much improved.  So four weeks ago I decided to try it.  It was easy because each day that goes by I feel better with less allergies and wheezing.  I now have some energy to get me through the day plus some to spare for fun after work.  And that’s something I haven’t experienced in years. As for actupuncture, I have not tried that yet.  I have a cousin who is a lifelong asthmatic  and undergoing acupuncture treatments and getting spectacular results. Her daughter is also receiving treatments and is 90% better now.  It is very expensive though because the treatments are weekly or more often. I pray that they find a real cure for this miserable condition.  Until they do I am going to keep an open mind and use everything traditional and alternative to help myself.

<snip> >Be sure to eat enough proteins to sustain the work of breathing you are >enduring.  Your respiratory muscles will require this high-calorie diet to >maintain strength.

Proteins are *not* a good source of calories.  Carbohydrates (starchy foods) and sugars *are*.  Eating protein to get calories is a hard way to do it, as outdoor types know.  And the amount of protein required by an adult to maintain muscle is quite low. The original poster at 92 pounds (6 1/2 stone, approx. 37kg) and 62" (5′2", approx. 1.55m) sounds to be very underweight, and is a poor eater by their own admission.  However they don’t say if poor eating has always been with them, or is new since they got asthma.  I did find myself wondering if they have some kind of eating disorder as well. Either way, maybe they should be visiting an appropriate person for dietary advice and since it sounds like their asthma is poorly controlled go back to their asthma doctor = or another one. <snip> — Surfer!

(tm) **** First of all, let me tell you a little about myself. I am a Respiratory Therapy student, about to enter the medical field.  I have asthma, but not as bad as you do. With that said, let’s talk. Asthma is a pathologic triad involving: Chronic Inflammation Reversible Airway Obstruction and Tenacious, excessive mucous production. The medications you are on should treat all these problems well. Some advice:  Drink lots of water — it is the only way to deal with that third part of the disease process and it is one reason why when you are hospitalized, we put an IV in you (amongst others)! Be sure to fight and push your way through this part of the disease using every tool you can get.  Look into new drugs such as Levalbuterol (Xopenex), mediator agonists like Accolate, Singulaire, etc. Set up an emergency plan with your Doctor.  By this I mean a peak flow reading that indicates you should go to the hospital.  You will at times be unsure of when to get help, if you plan ahead, you and your MD will be able to tell when you really need help.  Then, when this happens, don’t hesitate, get there fast (or just call an ambulance they have oxygen and meds ready when they arrive). If you are allergic to pollens and dust, get a home HEPA filter system to remove the allergens, dryer-heat your pillows once a week to kill mites, and wash bedding regularly, remove carpets, etc. Be sure to practice your Pursed-lip breathing techniques, this really helps. Some people laugh at it (those who don’t have to fight to breathe).  It is inhaled for two seconds, exhale for four through pursed lips (like applying a little resistance).  The back-pressure keeps closing airways open longer and lets more air out, so you can breathe more air in the next breath! The hospital also has catecholamines – stronger meds – to open your airways. Be sure to eat enough proteins to sustain the work of breathing you are enduring.  Your respiratory muscles will require this high-calorie diet to maintain strength. Stick to your schedule of inhaled steroids (azmacort, flovent, etc.) to fight the chronic inflammation and use an aerochamber or ’spacer’ device to increase the drug delivered into your lungs.  Take the Serevent at night before bed and again 12 hours later (4 puffs) to fight noctural symptoms (it is a long-acting albuterol, essentially). Fight – fight – fight!  Remember to stay calm and follow your medication schedule… And good luck.  I think if you can hang tight, you can get through this difficult time and maybe improve your asthma in the next few years.

I have the opposite problem – which is a real problem.  The meds I take make me hungry ALL the time, and with the weight gain from the steroids this is NOT a good thing. I’ve learned to tell the difference between "really" hungry and "medicine" hungry – but it is a major struggle.  One thing I will say, though, is that when my asthma is bad, I physically cant eat.  I cant wheeze and eat at the same time, LOL.  I was an extremely skinny child, because they didnt have rescue meds then, and I was always wheezing. Have you talked to your doctor about this?  This seems to be something that may indicate an underlying problem. I also suggest that before you ‘try’ anything you research it. Anything without a sound scientific basis or evidence of deception should be discarded.  Remember that to them it is merely profit, to you it can be life or death. Disability, like everything else in life, need not be permanent.  Your first priority is to get better, without the stress of work.  You can use any spare time volunteering.  I just started volunteering at the hospital I was admitted to for 10 days in April.  I think it’s important, as several have suggested, to find out what your triggers are.  I just discovered this week that I’m allergic to polyester batting (I quilt).  Niasha

Lately I have been working on my eating habits trying to eat at least two regular meals a day. To complicate things I am a very small eater. When my asthma worsens my appetite bids good bye. 2. Can any of you recommend any good acupuncturists in California? Any first hand experiences? I am so desperate I will try anything. 3. In the mornings my peakflow dips to about 180 so I have to scramble for a nebulizer. This has been a recent development. Any ideas why? Before Servent I would start wheezing at about 3.30 in the mroning. Now I feel awfully tight at 6.30 or so. I do not wheeze. 4. When I was hospitalized my oximeter read 74 and my peakflow was 140. Scary, huh. Also my potassium was 1.7 so I had some heart attack like symptoms. I asked to be discharged five days later when my peakflow read 300 and I was wheezing. Yes I do not wheeze at all when I am bad, I am tight and I start turning blue. I went to work the next day and well voila relapse. I then started working from home 4 hours a day. After 2 weeks I had to get back to the office. 5. My doctor does insist that I seriously think of going on disability. But my ego does not accept it. I am 29 and I want to be a contributing member of the community and I am scared that I will mentally vegettate if I retire. Just the fact that I have not been able to volunteer at the library and the community center for the past three monthshas made me feel so useless. 6. Yes Martin, I did feel great just thinking about slapping those people who have been suggesting that I a responsible for my asthma. But I am a bigger fool for having bought that, huh. 7. Yes I am going to check out on the buteyko too. Next week I am attending a meditation and a yoga camp. See, I meant it when I said I will try anything : ) Thank you so much guys. I finally feel like I live in a society where people understand what I am going through. God bless you all. Anna **** Posted from RemarQ – http://www.remarq.com – Discussions Start Here ™ ****

You must realize that your diet is affecting your health.  You need to gain weight.  Talk to a nutritionist and ask them to plan a good weightgaining diet for you so you can gain enough weight to have a buffer for a reserve when you are ill. Working in a high pressure environment also puts lots of stress on you and you may have to consider talking to a doctor about a medical disability retirement.   >I am currently on: Serevent 4 puffs twice a day, Flovent 220 >4 puffs 3 times a day, Atrovent 3 puffs three times a day >and albuterol as and when needed. Gaining weight is critical.  You have no weight reserves to support your body when it is stressed.  This society’s obsession with thinness has created many of the health problems.   Sue >**** Posted from RemarQ – http://www.remarq.com – Discussions Start Here ™ ****

First, it sounds as if your asthma isn’t in control at all.  Since you are taking quite a few meds, and have been for quite some time, this points to continuous exposure to triggers.  You need to find out what your triggers are and eliminate exposure, or you aren’t ever going to get better.  One of the things you may need to learn to control is the stress in your life.  Stress makes asthma worse, makes stress worse, makes asthma worse . . . Getting the cooperation of friends and family can sometimes be difficult.  I didn’t have a problem with my family, as both of my parents had asthma as children, and all of my siblings did, too. Friends and acquaintances, OTOH, were a different issue.  Basically, they finally divide into two groups:  Those who, with a little education, understand that asthma is a potentially deadly disease that CAN usually be controlled by careful attention to environment and medication schedules; and those who just never get it.  In self-defense, I have dropped all the ‘don’t get it’ types.  I really DON’T need the added stress of coping with someone who thinks that its ‘all in my head’, thank you.  Or that ‘just a little’ of something to which I am allergic won’t hurt me all that much. Good luck. Chris Owens

Sounds like you are underweight; what does your doctor say? It’s important to eat a well balanced diet per the Food Pyramid and get sufficient calories, protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber. An inadequate diet can cause the immune system to be weak. This is especially important when on prednisone, to eat lots of protein, fruits, vegetables; prednisone tends to deplete the body of necessary vitamins, minerals, protein. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I am currently on: Serevent 4 puffs twice a day, Flovent 220 > 4 puffs 3 times a day, Atrovent 3 puffs three times a day > and albuterol as and when needed. You are high dose asthma drugs plus drugs for rhinitis/sinusitis, GE reflux, and panic disorder. It sounds like your allergist has prescribed everything he can think of; and in desperation has suggested accupuncture. There is no convincing evidence accupuncture can help asthma significently. Sounds like it’s time for a 2nd opinion from another doctor; or a trip to National Jewish Center (top asthma center in the US, www.njc.org). You may have Steroid-resistant asthma and need special evaluation by top experts in the field. Asthma look-alike conditions have to be ruled out. Ellis

Need information for a patient 31 yrs old and diabetic.  Taking humulin insulin 3 times a day and the pen shots too.  Uses glucometer elite. My question to any of you is where oh where can the guy get help to buy this insulin and test strips.  He is back finally in college and only able to work part time.  Could not afford any insurance due to income and diabetes.  Payments monthly too high.  I called the ADA and they do not have a program to help people with money problems.  We live in Ohio and he needs some help here.  Is there any program available to help with the cost and where do I go to call.    He is not medicaid either. Please do not post a reply because I just got this address from someone to write and I do not use the NG’s.  He is my son and he will not check his sugars because the darn sticks are about $70.00 for 100.  I think he said. my name is Janers.

Hello All, Does anyone know what a white slimy scum on the top of your pond water is? It turns to a bubbly foam when aerated by waterfall and skimmer box. I have no idea what this is but covers 90 % of my pond, which is 25 ft by 35 ft. It appeared about 3 days after the algae bloom started. I have added additional filtration, so the pond recirculates every 1/2 hour currently (10,000 gals). This has been going on for over a week, and does not seem to affect my fish (no one floating). It seems to get worst during the day when warm out and somewhat disappears by morning and starts all over again. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as we are at a loss of what to do or worst what it is! Thanks, John & Donna

box. You have a skimmer box and it’s not getting rid of it?? Wild guesses include, tree pollen, dust blown in, dead algae. If the prevailing wind is blowing away from your skimmer, it might not be working. Is it dry in your neck of the woods? Dusty?  Neighborhood construction?  Neighbor mowing his lawn with breeze in your direction.  Nearby pine trees or other trees that are flowering?  When the white pine trees in my yard "do their thing" they make quite a mess on my pond and pool cover if the wind is from that direction. Anyway, I suggest you try to overfill your pond if this is possible and let it float off.  You might even use a hose spray to help sweep it to the edge where the water is going over. Good luck, Peace! Dan D.  Louisville KY Before you buy.

You get this when the level of dissolved organics in the pond is high. > I have no idea what this is but covers 90 % of my pond, which is 25 ft > by 35 ft. Do two 1/3 volume water changes of the next week, treating the new water to remove chlorine/chloramine.  Ideally do this by overflowing the pond so that the surface muck gets swept away, if this isn’t possible manually remove as much of the foam as possible & then do the water change at a time when foam is least visible i.e. when as much as possible is dissolved back in the water & able to be changed. The cause of the high DOC levels may be a one off event such as fish spawning, in which case changing the water as described should do. Alternatively it may be caused by overfeeding/overstocking , in which case feed less & do partial water changes every three or four weeks during the season. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> at a loss of what to do or worst what it is! > Thanks, > John & Donna

Response:

Also sometimes if you have a lot of frogs, mating does the same thing to the water, although you do seem to have a lot of it. Did you install the skimmer yourself, or is this another professional job? If someone else did it call them and tell them its not working right. It should have skimmed that stuff off.

Response:

If it’s stopping at a certain level and staying there.. and it’s below your waterfall, waterfall shouldn’t be the problem. The leak would be somewhere along the waterline at it’s lowest point. I know that probably doesn’t help much but it should give you a place to start instead of tearing out the waterfall. Texxi

Disconnect the waterfall and let the pump run only within the pond. See if it still leaks. If so, let the water drain to where it stops, then search the waterline for the leak. Can someone explain to me the names and differences of Digitech Whammy pedal? I’m pretty sure there are three versions, one of which being the XP100. I have an old Guitar School magazine which has the tab for Bulls on Parade and it says Morello uses a Digitech Whammy but it doesn’t say which one. Everyone seems to agree the first one (model number?) was the best so it’s not hard for me to imagine that’s the one he was using. Thanks in advance.

Response:

XP-100 will do it for you.  the original whammy, and whammy II for that matter, are out of production.  The new XP series is it.  The XP stands for Expression Pedal, but the XP-100 is the whammy-wah, and it’ll give you the sound you’re looking for. –Nikoleus, the gear guru. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Can someone explain to me the names and differences of Digitech Whammy >pedal?

Also sometimes if you have a lot of frogs, mating does the same thing to the water, although you do seem to have a lot of it. Did you install the skimmer yourself, or is this another professional job? If someone else did it call them and tell them its not working right. It should have skimmed that stuff off.

Also sometimes if you have a lot of frogs, mating does the same thing to the water, although you do seem to have a lot of it. Did you install the skimmer yourself, or is this another professional job? If someone else did it call them and tell them its not working right. It should have skimmed that stuff off.

Disconnect the waterfall and let the pump run only within the pond. See if it still leaks. If so, let the water drain to where it stops, then search the waterline for the leak. They say if you dribble milk along the liner, it will be sucked out where the water leaves the pond. Good luck! …elizabeth http://hometown.aol.com/lotts2c/life1/index.htm

It seems to get worst during the day when warm out and somewhat disappears by morning and starts all over again.

Hi Rechelle, We had a cat that did that right after her spay operation.  Is your cat hurt – can you touch her all over – can you bring on an attack by pressure?  I still feel guilty about this and it’s been 15 years ago – we went back to the same vet over and over again.  He gave us tranquillizers and it helped but eventually, we allowed her to be put down.  We went to a different vet with the next cat and told this story.  The next vet said we should have had her opened back up – probably the pain from the botched spay made her go insane.  Hind sight is 20/20, but I still feel awful.  Two years ago, we saved a shelter cat that was due to be euthanized as they said she was viscous – she needs an antidepressant on a daily basis – she needs meds, just like some people.  Please consider my experience and take your cat to a different vet for another perspective on what is going on. — Carone aka Carolyn Gregg in Canada.  This address is spam blocked.  Please

Response:

I think Carolyn has a good point here, and the fact that your cat lets you touch her anywhere is not necessarily proof that nothing is wrong. I dog-sit once a week for my friend’s dog whom I have known for 8 years, a nice-natured little dog. A year ago she was sitting on my knee when she suddenly bit me with no warning. Two weeks later she bit my friend’s boyfriend (whom she had lived with all her life) while sitting on his knee. This dog had never bitten anyone in her life. It took several more months and a change of vet before bladder stones were diagnosed: following the op. the dog stopped biting, and I figure maybe we moved our knees a fraction when she was sitting on our laps, just enough to hurt her, even though she let us stroke her everywhere without any apparent pain. Please get your cat thoroughly checked over by another vet. Good luck. Helen     Thanks Carone,     Yeah we can touch her anywhere, she doesn’t appear to be in any pain. Weirdest thing, the vets can’t think of anything for her mood.  Maybe just old age crankiness. I hope it’s not nearing the end of her life.  We’re gonna take her to a different vet to be sure.     Rechelle         Hi Rechelle,         We had a cat that did that right after her spay operation. Two years ago, we         saved a shelter cat that was due to be euthanized as they said she w as         viscous – she needs an antidepressant on a daily basis – she needs meds,         just like some people.  Please consider my experience and take your cat to a         different vet for another perspective on what is going on.         —         Carone aka Carolyn Gregg in Canada.  This address is spam blocked. They say if you dribble milk along the liner, it will be sucked out where the water leaves the pond. Good luck! …elizabeth http://hometown.aol.com/lotts2c/life1/index.htm

The Digitech Whammy, Whammy II, and Whammy XP100

That’s more like it!

Response:

If you are concerned he might have broken one of his legs, best to get him to a vet.

Please please please take him to a vet. He may be in great pain. Ginger

Not trying to be nasty, just an honest, simple question…if you had broken your leg, would you a) Wait for it to heal on it’s own   or… b) Seek medical help immediately.

Just an addendum to what it could be caused from & Rob’s good advice. Please help my pond has a leak, checked it visibly cannot find, loosing water fast. Pond drain down over night and stopped at a certain point. Now I am going to have to tear my water fall apart to look for leak. I know it is not in the water fall but maybe the rock on the very bottom holding up all the other rocks. If someone knows how to find and fix a leak please help.

Texxi

I have to tear out the water fall because part of it is on the liner. I have to take it apart to see the liner behind the fall. Do you know how to patch it once I find the leak or tear in the liner? Thank you
