Clarithromycin for treating underlying cause of Asthma

Question:

Anyone had any experience with this drug?  I hear that taking 250 mg twice a day for 6 weeks wiped it out in some patients, in a study by National Jewish.

Response:

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic (trade name Biaxin). What it can do is eliminate a respiratory tract infection that might be triggering asthma attacks. From time to time, there has been research to find a microbial cause of asthma, such as mycoplasma.  (If such existed, than an antibiotic like Biaxin might cure it.)  But so far, the evidence for a microbial cause of asthma remains scanty at best. — Steven D. asthmatic patient can suffer of "normal", other (for instance Helicobacter pylori) infection. GERD as known can trigger asthmatic symptoms. Clarithromycin happens to be used against Helicobacter … :-) P. —- [http://www.am.torun.pl/~pekasz]

H. Pyori causes inflammation of the stomach which decreases acid production and hence GERD. It is not uncommon for GERD to get worse after H. pylori has been treated. — CBI, MD

But it is difficult to leave a patient wtihout treatment (Helicobacter), if were diagnosed. To remark to use Clarithromycin cautiously, if choosen is good. P. —- [http://www.am.torun.pl/~pekasz]

I too this drug in 1996 for the eradication of h-pylori bacteria. I took it in doses of 1500mg per day along with prilosec and pepto-bismal for a treatment period of 28 days. I had a terrible time with bowels and weakness but no other problems. I would hate to go through it again but would if necessary. With your low dosage I would not expect you to have any problems.
