pneumonia and asthma not related…..

Question:

Thats what my second opinion doctor said ,saying since my last bout of pneumonia was in 96 and I wasnt diagnosed with asthma until 01 there is no relationship. He wasnt a pulmonary specialist so Im scheduled to see one for there opinion. I just want to know how I got asthma, wonder if the beta-blocker eye drops I took from 96 to 01 for my glaucoma had anything to do with it ? When I told my eye doc about my asthma he pulled me off the Timoptic saying it "interfered with asthma". That will be another question I ask at my appointment. I have not posted to the group in awhile, just thought I’d drop by with a update.

I had to have an echocardiogram done a couple of months ago.  When I went for my results, the cardiologist mentioned that he could prescribe a Beta-Blocker to help with my panic attacks.  Then he said…"You’re being treated for asthma, right?".  Yes…he then said.."I can’t give you a Beta drug".  I have a friend who was given a Beta-Blocker for a short time to control a blood pressure problem and she stated that it was hard for her to breathe and she doesn’t have asthma.  No thanks, no Beta’s for me!  Don’t know if this information helps with your question on the eye drops?

I would agree that the 5 year separation strongly argues against a connection. > I just want to know how I got asthma,

It can just happen. Usually there is no "cause" identified. > wonder if the beta-blocker eye > drops I took from 96 to 01 for my glaucoma had anything to do with it ?

They would not cuase asthma. Enough can be absorbed systemically in some people to trigger bronchospasm in those who are predisposed. Some asthmatics can take them and some can’t. If another agent can be used it makes sense to use it. if not, it may be worth trying the drops on and off to see if they affect you. > When I told my eye doc about my asthma he pulled me off the Timoptic > saying it "interfered with asthma".

It can. See above. — CBI, MD "Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it." -Andre Gide

Type in ‘iron and glaucoma’ into Medline .. there are a few articles which specifically mention the connection. >I had to have an echocardiogram done a couple of months ago.  When I went

Iron is KNOWN to build in the heart .. work by Dr. Jerome Sullivan >for my results, the cardiologist mentioned that he could prescribe a >Beta-Blocker to help with my panic attacks.  Then he said…"You’re being >treated for asthma, right?"
