Asthma warning (save a life)

Acutally, it is more potent. At equally effective doses it has less sytemic effect than older drugs. > and at higier dosage > (adult – about 1500-2000mkg/day)
Higher? – This is 2-3 times the maximally recommended dosage. It is uncommonly high. Anyone who really needs this much would have to take oral steroids as an alternative which would be more likely to cause the side effects being discussed. > singles cases of adrenal failure after > rapid breaking it administration has been described (for instance this > was announced by Docguide).
In other words: If you go from taking three times the recommended maximum dose to nothing too quickly bad things can happen. No kidding. > At others – budesonide – I have about such > cases not heard.

My child is on Flixotide. Did you use it and had problems about it or just read something about it? Are there any references to support your warning? Thank you Leo

Fluticasone is may be said stonger inhaled steroid and at higier dosage (adult – about 1500-2000mkg/day) singles cases of adrenal failure after rapid breaking it administration has been described (for instance this was announced by Docguide). At others – budesonide – I have about such cases not heard. P. —- [http://www.am.torun.pl/~pekasz]

All of the steroid inhalers can cause systemic symptoms if taken in sufficient quantities. None of them are as bad as taking oral steroids. Short courses of oral steroids will not cause most of the side effects, such as adrenal insufficiency, that are associated with them. I never heard of Flixotide brand name but gather from the context that it’s a steroid inhaler. Correct? Do other inhaled steroid inhalers cause such life-and-death dependency comparable to oral steroids such as prednisone? I have still never taken steroids, so have no first-hand feel for what it’s like to be on corticosteroids and then off.
Response:
Warning If your child is on Flixotide for their asthma it can cause adrenal insufficiency/dependacy, which can cause death if a doctor does not recognise it. Your child would be in most danger during times of crisis i.e. an emotional upset at school, an asthma attack, a running race, an argument, an illness, an accident or any event that raises the child’s stress levels. If your child becomes unwell it’s imperative that you inform your GP that they take the steroid inhaler as they may need a course of oral steroids until the event is over (DO NOT WAIT, not even for one day!) It is pointless testing children for this condition as the tests may give a false sense of security due to the medicine being in their body. DO NOT WITHDRAW THIS MEDICINE without a doctor’s guidance or advice, and do not forget a dose, as this too will bring on a crisis and your child is at risk of death. Save lives and pass the information on to parents of children with asthma please (remember that it’s imperative that they do not stop this medicine) Carol T
