Smoking Roommates
Question:
Hi all. I just found this newsgroup, I think it is great, I wish I had known about it before.:) Anyway, I am in college and I live in a apartment w/three other girls and two of them smoke. I have told them that I have asthma and allergies and that cigarrette smoke really bothers me. They don’t chain smoke, but they do smoke around 3-7 ciagarrettes a day in the living room. I don’t have serious asthma (Flovent and Serevent twice a day, totally under control no attacks for 4 years) so smoke doesn’t trigger an attack, but it makes my eyes sting like a %$#*#% and my nose start to run, etc. I was wondering if there are any tips anyone has or any literature to show them that smoke really isn’t good for me and hurts my quality of life. Thanks! -Amy

No amount of literature is going to convince them. Smokers live in a state of denial. Tell them that much as you love them (use your own word there!) you will have to get non-smoking room mates. And do so! >"Usenet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhea — >massive, diffucult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a >source of mind boggling amounts of excrement when you least expect it." >Gene Spafford 1992

Sorry to end on such a negative note. Best thing you can do is stay out of the common smoke-filled area as much as possible. You have your own room, right? And when you have to be around these two, do nothing to show you’re aware of their smoking. (Don’t open the window, cough, etc.) Try in your heart to be sympathetic because, believe me, in this area of their lives they really can’t help themselves. And next term don’t get stuck again. Never ever let anyone jam you in the same living quarters with (ugh) smokers.—kind regards, jack

Sorry to say, until you find non- smoking roomies you’re most probably stuck with the situation. As an ex heavy smoker I can tell you tobacco is a powerful drug habit that colors the thoughts and perceptions of everyone strongly addicted to it. Likely your roomates couldn’ care less about your discomfort. (There’s something the matter with you, that you don’t wanna’ smoke) If you pressure them you’ irritate ‘em. By the way, they’ve already ganged up on you.

Find roomates that don’t smoke or you might try spraying them with pepper spray when they light up:) Gordon Gordon Couger Stillwater OK

Boy is that the truth! As a non-smoker I can certainly say I was in a state of denial about all the negative aspects of smoking. That’s what addiction is all about. Patrice
Response:
No outside facilities Show them documents, and ask them if they can smoke else ware or at least some of the time. Some people are more sensitive to smoke and need protection. Don’t just roll over.
