Small wood stove for plywood scraps.

Question:

Hi, I have been trying to find a wood stove for my 1 1/2 car garage, (Make it nice and toasty in the winter for puttering)  But after a little reading I have found that I should NOT be filling your standard wood stove with plywood scraps.  (something I have a limitless supply of) What type of a stove will burn these safely?  (to get the fire hot enough to take care of the chemicals in the wood while not burning down the garage?) Any advice and where could I find prebuilt or plans to build? Thanks in advance, Dustin

Response:

build a barrel stove. http://www.webconx.com/wood_heat.htm Airtight Barrel Wood Stove Kits – "I built it," you can say with pride-Start with a standard 55 or 30 gal. steel barrel (you supply). Cut a door opening and smoke outlet. Bolt on the pipe connection, door frame and legs that we supply. In just a few hours, you’ll have a stove whose performance will approach anything on the market! (Barrel must be clean and empty of chemical contaminants and have permanently attached, not removable, ends.) — Steve Spence Subscribe to the Renewable Energy Newsletter: http://www.webconx.com/subscribe.htm Renewable Energy Pages – http://www.webconx.com Mirror Site http://www.webconx.dns2go.com/ (212) 894-3704 x3154 – voicemail/fax We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

Do not try this with pressure treated wood! http://www.origen.com/arsenic.html

Response:

Your best bet for a stove to burn chemically laden plywood is a masonry stove. A metal stove is not capable of burning the high temperatures that are needed to burn off the tars and tiny airborne particles that the plywood will produce. Metal starts to warp and twist about 950
