Controlling the "Itchies"
Question:
After being MIA for so long, it’s taking me awhile to catch up, but… I saw that some people are using Benadryl with varying degrees of success. For me it doesn’t do a thing except make me tired, but not enough to put me to sleep. So I end up getting sorta cranky because it’s a constant fight to remain alert (what’s a "lert"?). My doctor wrote me a script for a med called Atarax, <aka> Vistaril (hydroxyzine HCL), 25mg, and it’s been a God-send! I take one every other night. It makes me tired, but it also puts me out & combined with Ambien, helps me sleep better. And no "hangover" in the morning, either. It might be a viable alternative for those who aren’t getting good results from Benadryl. Or not. Hope this helps someone, — Harley "Can’t hang with the big dogs? Stay on the porch."

Once again, we have a varied reaction to a med. For me, they wouldn’t help me sleep…(unless Vistaril was in an injection) but they’d make me *really* hung over for at least 24 hrs .I’m talking about needing help to get a cup of coffee down, then bumping into walls all day long! codeee – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->After being MIA for so long, it’s taking me awhile to catch up, but… > I saw that some people are using Benadryl with varying degrees of >success. Vistaril makes me really wired. Nothing better for stopping the asthma attacks I get from some pollens, tho’. Love the liquid in spring and fall, but I hafta take it in the AM. Acts like 3 mugs of coffee for me. YMMV Hugs from Rosie — "If you wanna get it done, you gotta fight for yourself." – Meat Loaf, Bat Outta Hell II

Hi Harley, I have been taking Vistaril up to 50mgs for 5 years. I tend to become nauseous very often from migraines and it can be useful. Also, it has a mild anti-anxiety and sedative effect. Furthermore, others had mentioned since it was an antihistamine it might help with allergies (never tried it for that reason). Once I developed itching from pain medication and it got rid of that too. And on top of that it’s very inexpensive! PokerGuyAA – Thanks for your post
