After you get the mold off a wash with pretty strong boric acid in water will help keep the mold from growing back from underneath the paint if you can get it to soak in the texture or sheet rock. If you don’t have a vent fan get one an use it. — Gordon Gordon Couger Stillwater, OK www.couger.com/gcouger

Hi Lisa, For excellent information about how to get relief for your two year old with asthma and to handle the mould in your house, I suggest you look into a HEPA/carbon air purifier. Look for a serious air purifier, not just one of those plastic units available at most consumer stores. The Allergy Management Group at Aller Air makes the best unit I know of. Their claim to fame, which hapens to be true. is that they offer more features and more filtration capacity at a lower price than less effective units. They’re website is at www.allerair.com. Their toll-free number is 1-888-852-8247. Speak to Rita there. She has a lot of experience in dealing with asthma and mould and has been a great help to me. Tell her Richard referred you and send her my best regards when you speak to her. PS These are Canadian made and they work wonders on the really tough problems. I use a Model 5000 in my house. You can call me too if you wish. I’m at (514) 486-4844 in Montreal. Paint it with a ’starch’ based paint .. the same type of paint recommended for houses with a bad lead content. Starch binds up the metals. Also .. they have found by heating the area up to high temperatures .. kills the mold. http://www.thermopure.com If I remember correctly .. the above is the url for a company which speaks to this method. A bath fan would help remove the moister after a shower. Prevention is the key here. If you have to repaint make sure the new paint is moister resistant. Lane

You need to solve the humidity problem that caused the mold in the first place, probably by installing a ventilation fan to keep humidity below 50% RH. The mold can be killed with a Chlorox solution, but be careful not to get in eyes or lungs; room should be ventilated if using it. Then you will need to remove all the moldy paint and moldy surface before resealing and repainting with oil based paint. Using scraping, sanding, paint remover or whatever works. Generally sanding is the method used. Don’t try to paint over the moldy paint; it will just bleed thru.
