Asthma Question
Question:
Hi, I just recently had a bout with bronchitis about 3 weeks ago. I still have a productive cough, though less frequently now. An allergist I went to the other day told me he thought I had asthma, but I’m not so sure (he based this mostly on the breath test). Just wondering whether it can take a while for bronchitis to resolve and whether anyone on this list thinks the doc might have jumped to conclusions. Other than the occassional cough, I don’t have any other symptoms of asthma. Thanks.

http://home.aafp.org/afp/980315ap/hueston.html Acute Bronchitis AAFP "The cough in acute bronchitis may produce either clear or purulent sputum. While this cough generally lasts seven to 10 days, it can persist. Approximately 50 percent of patients with acute bronchitis have a cough that lasts up to three weeks, and 25 percent of patients have a cough that persists for over a month.12 " http://www.njc.org/medfacts/uri.html URI (Colds) & Acute Bronchitis "Sometimes viral bronchitis can cause asthma-like symptoms. This is more common in persons with a history of asthma or allergy. This condition’s main symptom is a dry, hacking cough that lasts four to eight weeks or longer after the initial infection is over. The cough may be triggered by cold, dry air, smoke or dust. Bronchodilator and corticosteroid medications may be prescribed for persistent or severe cases." It could take 6-8 weeks to recover from Acute Bronchitis. Then the breath [spirometry] test could be repeated, if still symptomatic. Another consideration is whether bronchodilators like albuterol help control the cough. If you do have asthma, it may normally be a mild case except when exacerbated by a viral infection. Ellis
