Right you are. And H2O2USP (10 volume) *is* a 3% dilution in water > in the case of periodontal disease is the food grade >hydrogen peroxide .. which comes in 35% and you dilute it down to 7% to use as >a mouthwash. >That is one part food grade to five parts water.
You might be on the right track, but your math sucks. 1 part food grade to *4* parts water will be 7% H2O2. >Usually can find the foodgrade at the health food store or your garden supply >centre and some pharmacies are carrying it now. >Watch out though the stuff is like acid and will act the same.
He’s right on this one, folks. Food grade H2O2 liberates a lot of pure oxygen and holds it on the skin surface, and it will burn skin pretty quickly.

>>Watch out though the stuff is like acid and will act the same. >He’s right on this one, folks. Food grade H2O2 liberates a lot of pure oxygen >and holds it on the skin surface, and it will burn skin pretty quickly.
If I am not mistaken, H202 oxidizes (burns) the skin by breaking down to H20 and singlet 0, which then burns the skin. Pure oxygen, or O2 gas, is liberated when H202 comes into contact with catalase, a protective cellular enzyme. This is what you see bubbling when hydrogen peroxide contacts an open wound…O2 gas, which does not burn.

You realize the 250/50 has 50 mcg of Serevent in it. If you go to multiple doses of the 100/50 you end up with too much of that. Something to consider. Sometimes you have to go for the individual components to get the mix right. Fritz

"Listerine wouldn’ hurt…" Straght from the bottle, undiluted, it sure as hell would hurt already irritated mucous membrane. I used very mild salt water the one and only time I ever contracted thrush. In my opinion same thing for hyrogen peroxide (which might be good for thrush. Sure good for a lot of things) Peroxide usually comes (medicinally) as 10 volume, i.e. ten percent. I would dilute it down to two or three percent beore using it in my mouth or on a small open wound or possibly a fungus infested area. But this is just Nurse Quackette home remedies.

great! thanks for the feedback. i used to take qvar 100 (before i switched to advair 250) and just rinsed my mouth with water a bit.. no problems. ah well… > ANY form of sugar will make thrush > absolutely happy and vigorous.
yes and have you ever noticed that if you have a yeast overgrowth, that you crave sweets? interesting stuff… but not very nice to have. > Those pills are supposed to be _active_ bacteria. yes exactly. i tell anyone who ever asks me about acidophilus to make sure that it is refrigerated in the store and at home. > If you are on the 250/50 Advair dose that is more potent. yes i am on the 250 and am considering trying the 100. however i expect that i will still need to take 500 (mgs?) of it to get these results. since my asthma is better in the winter (allergy related) then i may give the 100 a try before spring just to see. but i will see how i make out on the 250 first… if the thrush gets to be unbearable then a step down might be called for. however, i am feeling much better today… the thrush is gone/almost gone so i have stopped taking that disgusting nystatin and will rely on proper rinsing and acidophilus and see what happens. > You’re very welcome. hi steve! thankyou very much for your message. glad to hear that advair is working well for you too! i have always had a drink of water ready to go as soon as ive done my inhalation but i will definately heed your warning about rinsing immediately. i will try your suggestion of rinsing even before ive exhaled! advair 250 does seem to be quite copious… i wonder how much has gotten into my lungs since there seems to be so much of it in my mouth. but since it has been so effective i know that something is getting in there
now that i think about it, i used to get some sore throat and hoarseness after inhaling QVAR in the past. i had thought that it was from taking too high a dose but it does seem logical that it was caused by the steroid remaining in my throat. ahha! luckily i never did get thrush from it. anyway, im fairly confident now that with improved inhalation technique, thorough rinsing and acidophilus that i will be thrush free and able to continue taking advair. everyones responses have helped me greatly. thankyou! Different steroid, same technique. Here’s a link for proper use: http://advair.ibreathe.com/consumer/2_2_taking_advair.htm > this evening i took your advice and rinsed with listerine instead of plain > water. wow! that stuff is strong, but i do think that it rinsed my mouth > and throat out better than water has in the past and it couldnt hurt so i > will continue to use it or some other mouthwash.
If you have an active yeast condition it may feel stronger. It’s pretty strong anyway. I use inhaled Qvar and use listerine mouthwash right after. I often brush my teeth with the stuff. Brushing your tongue won’t hurt either (but it gags me a bit). > i really dont think that i want to gargle with vinegar… yuck!!
Neither would I. That’s a last resort before medicine. > thanks also for your input concerning yogurt. i am taking acidophilus > directly (yeasts competitive bacteria which is in yogurt to a certain > degree). i felt that i could control the ingestion of the acidophilus > easier via pill/powder than i could with yogurt. i had not thought though > that the yogurt was creating an acid environment! good point!!
Non-sweetened yogurt is pretty acid. Some women have used it via vagina to clear up vaginal yeast infections. It works, my wife has done it. Again, NO SWEETENER/HONEY OR ANYTHING like it. Non-fat, unsweetened yogurt is preferable. ANY form of sugar will make thrush absolutely happy and vigorous. > i had another thought today which involved breaking open an acidophilus > capsule and applying it directly to patches of thrush… that might help as > well.
Something else you might try is Kefir, another cultured milk product that is more liquid. For the "pills", opening them in a bit of water and doing a thorough swish and swallow would probably work better. Those pills are supposed to be _active_ bacteria. If they are not in a cooler when you buy them and kept in your fridge they probably aren’t alive and worth much. > also i have now started to brush my teeth/mouth after gargling with the > mouthwash… and have added regular replacement of my toothbrush head to > my ‘to do’ list (dont want to re-infect myself!). > i really appreciate the suggestions that i have received here! thanks!
If you are on the 250/50 Advair dose that is more potent. It also comes as 100/50. I have no way of knowing what dose YOU need but this may be something to discuss with your physician. If symptoms are controlled you may _consider_ a careful step down. You’re very welcome. hi fritz – thankyou for your response. while ive not used a discus style inhaler before i am familiar with a turbohaler which seems to require the same type of inhalation. but even though i did read the inhalers instructions first and think that i am inhaling sharply, i still might not have the exact hang of it… using pressurized inhalers for years has probably conditioned me to inhale the medication a certain way. thankyou for the inhalation tips… i will definately keep them in mind tomorrow morning. this evening i took your advice and rinsed with listerine instead of plain water. wow! that stuff is strong, but i do think that it rinsed my mouth and throat out better than water has in the past and it couldnt hurt so i will continue to use it or some other mouthwash. i really dont think that i want to gargle with vinegar… yuck!! thanks also for your input concerning yogurt. i am taking acidophilus directly (yeasts competitive bacteria which is in yogurt to a certain degree). i felt that i could control the ingestion of the acidophilus easier via pill/powder than i could with yogurt. i had not thought though that the yogurt was creating an acid environment! good point!! i had another thought today which involved breaking open an acidophilus capsule and applying it directly to patches of thrush… that might help as well. also i have now started to brush my teeth/mouth after gargling with the mouthwash… and have added regular replacement of my toothbrush head to my ‘to do’ list (dont want to re-infect myself!). i really appreciate the suggestions that i have received here! thanks! hi jon! thankyou for your suggestion! i have just finished my inhalation and did brush my teeth/mouth thoroughly after using listerine. i will now brush my teeth after every single inhalation…. it certainly cant hurt
in fact now that i look at all of the suggestions that i have received here and elsewhere, it is obvious that i have never, ever, rinsed my mouth very well after inhaling a steriod. i have been lucky to not have had thrush before. Make sure you are taking the Advair correctly. The "Discus" needs a FAST inhalation, not a slow one like the MDI. Try making your mouth and throat very open and the tongue out of the way while inhaling. Rinse with Listerine (probably any mouthwash) thoroughly afterwards. Candida albicans (Thrush) is a normal resident in the mouth. Left over steroid is causing it to overgrow. Rinsing it out _should_ be sufficient. If that doesn’t work something acidic (diluted vinegar?) may work. Yeasts hate acid. The yogurt is providing competitive bacteria and an acid environment. Make sure NOT TO TAKE SWEETENED YOGURT. I take Advair and also find it helps tremendously. What you need to do is very simple – after inhaling the Advair, even while you’re still holding your breath, take a mouthful of water and swish it around, even gargle it a bit, to clear the Advair out of your throat. I find the timing is critical – the sooner after you’ve inhaled the Advair, the better. I don’t get thrush but I do lose my voice if I skip this step and waiting even a minute after inhaling seems to be enough time for the Advair to get into places you don’t want it. Be very very careful about taking advair. There is a blurb in their commericals that it "can cause a change in the heart rhythm". My father took advair, and liked it too. How about eating the yogurt, with the 3 good types of bacteria, incl. acidophilus every day? There are many choices: organic, non or low fat, and even in the supermarket these days. Read the label to be sure of what you’re getting. I am sure to take it when I’m on antibiotics. I’ve not used Advair, so I don’t know about it’s effects.
