Any connection between Asthma and nut allergy?

Question:

I’ve been asthmatic since childhood, the condition deteriorating in the last five to six years.  I use fluticasone, salmeterol, salbutamol and recently started using Singulair. I have previously tested positive to allergies to animal hair, feathers etc – the usual range of triggers I’ve recently experienced a reaction to eating nuts.  I experience tingling and a small degree of swelling of my mouth.  I also experience heartburn (I have problems with acid reflux anyway).  I also become slightly breathless, enough to warrant taking a dose of salbutamol. I’ve never showed signs of being allergic to nuts before.  Is this something to be concerned about?   Is there any connection to being asthmatic?  I am aware of the danger of anaphylactic shock, and that it can be caused by nut allergy, and wonder if I should mention these new symptoms to my doctor.

Amongst the foods to which one may be allergic, nuts are possibly the most likely to lead to anaphylactic reaction, though various seafoods are also high on the list. The fact that you have only begun to react to them recently is unfortunately not unusual, even in established adults. Yes, you should inform your doctor.
