Insurance won't pay for Singulair

Question:

My friend is on SSI (Supplemental Security Income is a cash assistance program for      disabled individuals with limited income and assets--so I believe that means he has medicaid?? not sure) and his doctor just informed him the insurance no longer covers Singulair.  How could this be possible?  Has anyone heard of this?  He has severe asthma and maybe emphysema.  I told him about Accolate and the doctor thinks they will pay for it (I pray they do).  I am so upset that he may be prevented from getting such necessary medicine that is not new or unproven, I thought they could only refuse to pay for necessary meds if they were experimental.  I worry that this is a bad sign of a trend that will be a problem even with regular insurance.  If anyone knows anything about this, let me know.

Response:

I do not know about SSI, but many insurance plans will not cover a particular drug, but will cover its equivalent. sue - Hide quoted text -- Show quoted text - > My friend is on SSI (Supplemental Security Income is a cash assistance > program for      disabled individuals with limited income and assets--so > I believe that means he has medicaid?? not sure) and his doctor just > informed him the insurance no longer covers Singulair.  How could this > be possible?  Has anyone heard of this?  He has severe asthma and maybe > emphysema.  I told him about Accolate and the doctor thinks they will > pay for it (I pray they do).  I am so upset that he may be prevented > from getting such necessary medicine that is not new or unproven, I > thought they could only refuse to pay for necessary meds if they were > experimental.  I worry that this is a bad sign of a trend that will be a > problem even with regular insurance.  If anyone knows anything about > this, let me know.

Response:

I think Singular is a problem because it is a non-generic drug and no competition and therefore a high price.  I get my prescriptions thru the VA and they do even have the drug available.  Hopefully Accolate will serve his needs.  When I retire next year I have to either pay over a grand a year for singular or switch.
